Historically Trnava University (TU) represents one of the oldest universities in Slovakia. Trnava University was established by Cardinal Peter Pázmaň in 1635 and consisted of four faculties (colleges) of: theology, arts, law and medicine. The university became well-known also thanks to an observatory founded by Maximilián Hell, a University library, gardens and a theatre. It existed for 142 years and in 1777, it was moved to Buda. The National Council of the Slovak Republic re-established Trnava University on 25th March 1992, pursuant to Act No. 191/1992 and reopened it on 1st July 1992. Today, TU has five faculties: Faculty of Philosophy and Arts; Faculty of Education; Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Work; Faculty of Law and Faculty of Theology. The Faculty of Education represents the only workplace within Trnava University where science and education take place within the context of pedagogical study and scientific fields. The faculty guarantees and provides complex education for teachers of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, prepares instructors and social teachers, as well as specialists in the field of preschool pedagogy and fine art pedagogy. Study programmes of several subject didactics and also pedagogy are carried out within PhD study at the faculty. The research and education at the faculty are supported by modern technical equipment, specialised laboratories, studios, classrooms with audio-visual technology and qualified personnel at the departments. The education at the faculty is carried out in the form of full-time study and part-time study. Apart from the regular university education, the faculty also ensures education activities to support the lifelong learning of teachers (continuing professional development). The high-quality standard of the education provided by the faculty is demonstrated by the effective way our graduates apply their knowledge and skills in practice. The Faculty of Education consists of 9 departments, two of them are focused on preschool and primary pedagogy, general and social pedagogy, all the other departments specialize in subject teacher education. There are 1300 students in full-time study and 650 students in part-time study at the faculty.
